European Parliament signs off Welsh MEP’s eighth report

MEPs today voted on Welsh Labour MEP Derek Vaughan’s eighth report to the European Parliament.

Mr Vaughan has also produced six opinions for the Parliament, making a total of 14 reports and opinions. This is the highest of any Welsh MEP.

Today’s report, penned by Mr Vaughan, detailed his investigation into how prepared EU Member States are to deliver the next round of EU funding in the 2014-2020 budget period.

Mr Vaughan said: “I am pleased to say that Wales is well ahead of England in this respect – in fact Wales is one of the best prepared regions in the EU. Having a responsive Labour Government in power in Wales has been a major factor in ensuring that we are well prepared.

“My report also looks at the extent to which member states have taken on board the lessons learnt from the 2007-2013 funding period – including greater coordination between national and local bodies and actively involving stakeholders such as NGOs, businesses and universities in the process.”

Mr Vaughan’s previous reports and opinions have focused on, among other topics, EU budget expenditure, structural funds and combatting fraud and tax evasion in the EU.

Mr Vaughan's report follows his success in securing more funding for Wales in 2014-2020 after the Tory UK Government initially insisted on a £400m cut for Wales.

As a result of his lobbying Wales stands to be £130m better off in the next funding period which means more EU money to support Welsh businesses, research and jobs.
