Let’s make Fair Trade Fortnight another step towards global justice

Fairtrade fortnight

"Britain is leading the world on Fair Trade. In the past year, we drank 2 billion cups of Fairtrade coffee, 3.2 billion cups of tea and ate 1.3 billion bananas. And Fairtrade sales are up 19%, despite the downturn. This shows that the public has developed a keen appetite for products which give farmers a fair deal for their products", said Euro MP, DEREK VAUGHAN marking Fairtrade Fortnight (25th February – 10th March).

Labour MEPs want the government to translate this public support for trade justice into concrete policies to support small farmers when David Cameron hosts the G8 Summit of world leaders in June this year.

The Fairtrade Foundation marked Fairtrade Fortnight by launching a campaign calling for urgent action to support the 500 million smallholder farmers who produce 70% of the world's food but who themselves often go hungry and live in poverty.

Campaigners want David Cameron to use his influence at the G8 Summit to get a better deal for these smallhold farmers.

Labour MEPs are urging constituents to back the online petition in support of this campaign:

"We want to see the best possible deal for smallhold farmers in world trade, and supporting Fair Trade in the shops is a way we can support the campaign in our daily lives in the UK."

"Over 10,000 people have signed the online petition so far," he said.

The final petition will be delivered to David Cameron at World Fair Trade Day in May before the G8 meeting the following month.
