Welsh MEP calls for pharma giant, Grünenthal to take responsibility for thalidomide deaths

Welsh MEP, Derek Vaughan has called on Grünenthal to accept fault and provide appropriate compensation to victims of thalidomide and their families.

Following a meeting with Mikey Argy from the ‘Show your Hand’ Thalidomide survivors campaign, Derek Vaughan MEP said:

“After 52 years of campaigning, Grünenthal, the inventors of the drug responsible for over 20,000 deaths, gross disfigurement and a lifetime of pain are still ignoring their victims' pleas for help.

“There are 6,000 Thalidomide survivors left worldwide, including 467 in the UK. They just want to live a comfortable life, and Grünenthal should be held accountable.

"The remaining survivors are entitled to financial compensation to ensure they can meet the cost of ongoing care, particularly given the debilitating conditions caused by the drug in old age.

“Instead, Grünenthal continues to dodge responsibility – this is simply unacceptable.

“That’s why I’ve signed a letter to the Health Commissioner, Tonio Borg to ask him to take action on this issue and I will continue to support the Thalidomide survivor’s campaign over the coming months.”
