Welsh MEP to report on better use of EU funds for next budget round

A leading Welsh Labour politician has been appointed to look at ways to make EU funding more efficient and effective across the continent in time for the implementation of the next allocation of Cohesion Policy investment expected to begin in 2014.

Welsh Labour’s Derek Vaughan will be responsible for drafting a report to the European Parliament’s influential Regional Development Committee that will make recommendations aimed at co-ordinating and improving the process of allocating financial support to Member States and ensuring that the money delivers results that are targeted and measurable.

Mr Vaughan said:

“Structural Funds have been vital to Wales in providing much needed investment in infrastructure, skills and training designed to drive forward the creation of jobs and economic growth.  Funding worth billions of pounds has been used to transform deprived communities and help equip people to face the difficult economic climate that we are currently in.”

“My report will look at the use of EU funds not just in Wales but in the EU as a whole.  I will be seeking to engage with other regions and Member States to study examples of best practice, check that structures are robust and accountable and prepare the ground for the next round of funding when that comes on stream next year.”

“It is important that everything is in place across all Member States ready for 2014 so that the funding can begin to make an impact from day one in tackling the priorities all too apparent in those areas that need it most.”
